How do you know what its going to be rare?

We all know that in each series of coin there are some rare dates. Well how do we know when the next rare date is going to be?

For example what if in 2008 the mint only made 500,000 D nickles. Would we know in 2008 or would we have to wait till 2009 to see the mintage??

(yes i know the mint wont do that)

I think the mint has gotten better and posting this info on their webpage as soon as they have it. They even have rss feeds now. Of course they don't really know until they're done and they won't be official until Jan of next year. They are probably done with Washington dollar coins now and they posted an estimate but they say they won't publish the final number until Jan 2008.

Who can tell where the market will go with current coins. To cover myself I buy the uncirculated mint set and silver set annually. That way I have atleast one of every coin.

Also unusal designs like the 2 year nickel set 2004 and 2005. Even though there were hundreds of millions minted, that figure is incredibly small in comparison to the 66 years of Jefferson nickels prior with the old Jefferson design.

Lastly, most people set aside the first year of minting of a new coin, but rarely the second year. If you stock up, stock up on the second year.
